However, what it does do, it does brilliantly: it is a young and innovative beer Made using a completely different method from Kriek Lambic, it is a combination of aged brown beer which is mixed with fresh, whole cherries and, after 12 months, is blended with Oud Bruin and Goudenband of diffrrent ages. Liefmans - Cuvee Brut Kriek (Cherry) The basis for Liefmans Kriek Brut was laid in the years 1900 to 1930, when local farmers started popping in to Liefmans, to ask for a barrel of beer to use with their glut of 'krieken' (cherries). But it was Pierre Van Geluwe-De Berlaere who was the first brewer at Liefmans to do the reverse – and add some 'krieken' directly to the beer maturing in the tanks. Before packaging, beers from different vats are blended and mixed with fresh beer for priming and refermentation. Until 2007, Liefmans also made an Oud Bruin called Odnar with only 4% ABV. Oud Bruin is also the base beer for the brewery’s kriek (the word is Flemish for “cherry’).
